Acclaimed dancer and author of best-selling book Mao’s Last Dancer – Li Cunxin – has revealed his first season as the new Artistic Director for the Queensland Ballet.
Li will begin 2013 with Cinderella choreographed by Ben Stevenson – one of the first productions Li danced when he was living in America after his defection from China. “It is a special ballet in my heart,” he said. “It is a beautiful ballet with beautiful music and I am very excited to share Ben’s Cinderella with Queensland,” Li said.
This will be followed by Giselle produced and staged by Australian-based dancer Ai-Gul Gaisina, and will open in Toowoomba in the middle of the year.
Li also introduces a new contemporary program later on in the season. Elegance will feature works from Ma Cong, Ben Stevenson and new Queensland Ballet master Greg Horsman.
And finally, to finish the year Queensland will be graced with the story of The Nutcracker. “Christmas is such a special time in our lives and I think this ballet will continue that holiday tradition and that spirit of the season,” he said. “It is also for Queensland Ballet to be able to give Queensland people something special in that festive season.”
