Nora Ephron, screenwriter of iconic films such as When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail has passed away from leukaemia overnight in New York at the age of 71.

Nominated for three Oscars, Ephron began her career as a journalist in her twenties and went on to be a best-selling author and a successful director and producer.

Working alongside Hollywood’s elite including Billy Crystal, Meryl Streep, John Travolta, Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks and many more, Ephron was among the most quotable and influential writers of her generation.

Known for her witty tongue and passion for New York, Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, issued a statement saying “From her earliest days at New York City’s newspapers to her biggest Hollywood successes, Nora always loved a good New York story, and she could tell them like no one else”.
