Behind the scenes at STUDIO in October
October has been a busy month for STUDIO’s production team – We’ve spent a day with singer Kamahl, took a trip to Victoria and met some of the incredible artists who are melding science with art as part of The Australia Council’s Synapse initiative.
First up, STUDIO met with artists from The Australia Council’s Synapse initiative, a program which places artists within leading science and technology organisations to create a fascinating blend of culture and science. Singer Kamahl welcomed us into his Sydney home to talk about his involvement in one of these projects, Void Love, a video artwork that mixes soap opera and astro-physics theories. Created by Melbourne based artists Nicky Forster and Willoh S Weiland, it explores the big bang theory and other mysteries of the universe, with Kamahl using his crooning vocals to narrate a journey through space, love and the forces of the human heart. You can watch Void Love online here and stay tuned for STUDIO’s interview with Kamahl on air in early November.
Then STUDIO travelled to Mildura to meet Blue Mountains artists Ken & Julia Yonetani, who spent three months in the region studying the effects of salinity in the Murray-Darling basin. The result is an exquisite sculptural installation created entirely from Murray River salt. Heading back into Melbourne, STUDIO made a quick stop at the Australian Synchrotron to chat with multi-media artist Chris Henschke. Chris has been inspired by the Synchrotron to create multi-media artworks that involve images created by sound and movement.
Stay tuned for all STUDIO’s Synapse ArtBreaks on Youtube over the next few weeks. Finally back in Sydney, The Australia Council’s ArtStart program provides grants to recent arts graduates to kickstart their budding careers.
STUDIO had the opportunity to sit down with digital artist David Kirkpatrick, who turned to digital media when he realised he wasn’t going to be the next Beethoven. David partners with Japanese dancer Anna Kuroda to form ‘Murasaki Penguin’, a cross continent duo creating moving pieces that explore beauty, sound and movement. Find out more with STUDIO’s ArtBreaks coming soon.
