November was another busy month for STUDIO’s production team. From Brisbane to Singapore, we captured some of the most exciting Australian artists and their work.
First up, STUDIO ventured to Singapore for the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize, a triennial ceremony which recognises the most outstanding contemporary artwork produced in the Asia Pacific. We spoke with Australian photographer Daniel Crooks who won this year’s juror’s prize for his hypnotic slow-motion video of a man performing tai chi, Static No. 12. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can catch it here.
Back in Australia, we headed to the Sunshine State to visit some emerging local artists who won the Australia Council’s ArtStart program. These sought-after grants provide financial assistance to recent creative arts graduates, giving them valuable support at the beginning of their career. You can see some previous ArtStart videos on the STUDIO Youtube page.
Liesel Zink, a Brisbane based choreographer, took our breath away with some incredible dance moves and her simple passion for what she does. Liesel’s latest work ‘Fifteen’, has been the talk of Brisbane and Melbourne city streets. The contemporary dance project draws from in-depth studies of body language and human behaviour observed daily in city life. You can watch some of her pieces here and stay tuned for STUDIO’s interview with Liesel in early December.
Another Brisbane based artist, Ryan Presley, was kind enough to sit down with us and chat about some of his recent work. Ryan is a visual artist of dual European and Indigenous heritage and his prints and paintings focus on cultural identity and question Australian social standards. His recent 2010 exhibition included a set of Australian bank notes re-designed to feature leading indigenous figures from history entitled ‘Blood Money’. Stay tuned for our interview with Ryan coming to STUDIO in December.
And finally, we profiled Emma Lindsay, a painter and installation artist. Emma’s most recent pieces were based on her dead bird studies; each artwork focused on the tangential relationships between culture, history, art and nature. You can watch our interview with Emma on channel 132 or on our Youtube page.
