Congratulations to the winners of The 2011 Helpmann Awards last night. A dizzying array of Australian stage talent descended on the Sydney Opera House to celebrate theatre’s night of nights.

The indomitable Geoffrey Rush won the Best Actor in a Play award for The Diary of a Madman, beating Toby Schmitz for Much Ado About Nothing and Richard Roxburgh. Screen royalty Cate Blanchett was awarded Best Female Actor in a play for the Sydney Theatre Company’s Uncle Vanya, while the best play went to The Wild Duck at Belvoir Street Theatre.

Best Ballet or Dance Work went to Expressions Dance Company for Where the Heart Is, while Best Opera went to Partenope, with star Emma Matthews winning Best Female in an Opera for her role in the opera.

And the best musical of 2011? The rollicking Mary Poppins.
